Asbestos
Asbestos is made up of tiny fibres that form a dust if disturbed. These fibres are invisible to the naked eye and don’t break down over time.
Asbestos is virtually indestructible, withstanding heat, decay, erosion, as well as fire and water-resistant properties. Before 1990 it was considered extremely useful for building products and Australia was one of the world’s highest users per head of asbestos, with an estimated one-third of homes built in Australia containing some form of asbestos products. Asbestos is commonly found in older Australian homes built before 1990 and should be treated with extreme caution.
Friable Asbestos can be pulverised, crumbled or reduced to powder using your hand, whereas non-friable asbestos cannot. Non-friable asbestos has been mixed with a bonding compound and becomes friable if damaged. Friable asbestos was used in industrial rather than residential applications although loose-fill asbestos has also been found in homes as wall and ceiling insulation.
If your home or office building was built or renovated before 1990, there is a significant chance it could contain asbestos.
Unfortunately, there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos, and it can be extremely dangerous and cause a multitude of serious health problems. As such, asbestos should only be removed by a licenced professional.
You don’t need to hear it from us, Asbestos is dangerous with serious consequences. If you have any doubt what you have is asbestos, give us a call. We will advise on the best direction to rid or secure it.
